SACRAMENTO, CA., October 4, 2011-The Golden 1 Credit Union has received two highly respected awards for its commitment to providing programs and services that benefit members and the public in the communities it serves. Golden 1 was selected to receive the 2011 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award and the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award by the California Credit Union League (CCUL). Golden 1, which competed in the $1 billion plus asset category, will advance to the national level, where it will compete against other credit unions of similar size.
The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award recognizes the efforts of credit unions to improve the lives of members of the community through outreach programs. Golden 1 was honored for its efforts to protect people from identity theft through free community shredding events. At the shredding event last April, 2,850 people attended and more than 151,000 pounds of confidential information was destroyed safely and securely—a 40% increase over the previous year’s event. Another event is planned for this coming October 22.
"Golden 1 is very pleased to provide this service to the community," said Donna A. Bland, Golden 1 President and CEO. "Keeping people safe from identity theft is a top priority for Golden 1."
In addition, Golden 1 received first place for the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award, which recognizes credit unions for their practical application of the “people helping people” philosophy. Golden 1 was recognized for its LifeLine AdvanceSM program, which helps members by providing them with financial relief in times of need--but also encourages them to save their money in order to prepare for similar emergencies should they occur in the future.
"Our LifeLine Advance program is designed to help people break the payday lending cycle and develop improved saving habits," said Bland.
Both awards are administered at the state level by the CCUL and nationally by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).
The Golden 1 Credit Union is California's leading credit union, with more than 80 branches, $7.7 billion in assets and nearly 600,000 members. For more information, please visit golden1.com.
