SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 2, 2012—At The Golden 1 Credit Union, a major emphasis is placed on providing exceptional service to its members. Creating a strong workplace is an important piece in supporting this goal. Golden 1 was recently honored for its efforts in this area by being named the winner of the Large, Not-for-Profit category in the Sacramento Workplace Excellence Leader (SWEL) awards. This marks the third time the credit union has been recognized with this award, having previously won in 2005 and 2009.
"Offering creative and unique programs for our employees creates a very positive working atmosphere," said Golden 1 President and CEO Donna A. Bland. "We know that when employees are happier, they are more likely to provide exceptional service to our members, which is one of the core values that guide us here at Golden 1."
More than 100 companies were nominated, but only nine received an award. Golden 1 earned praise from judges for contributing to the wellbeing of its employees by offering numerous training resources, holding events and campaigns to improve employee health, and providing opportunities for employees to help communities through volunteering.
Many events and programs at Golden 1 are designed with employees in mind. For example, the credit union celebrates "Employee Appreciation Days" several times a year; holds company-wide potlucks, ice cream socials, and bake sales; and gives employees the chance to win free tickets to various events, including the California State Fair, concerts, community plays, and sporting events. Golden 1 even has a "Golden Spirit Team" that is dedicated to creating and encouraging an enjoyable work environment for all levels of staff.
"Following the 'people helping people' philosophy is a long tradition for Golden 1, and it's not limited to community service—we also practice it within our organization." adds Bland. "We see winning this award as recognition that we're doing something right."
The Golden 1 Credit Union is California's leading credit union, with more than 80 branches, $7.8 billion in assets, and more than 600,000 members.
