Sacramento, Calif., December 24, 2013 - Golden 1 Credit Union announced today that it is contacting its members who have credit and debit cards that were used to make purchases at Target stores across the United States between November 27 and December 15. Target announced that cards used during this period were part of a data compromise affecting as many as 40 million shoppers. Approximately 67,000 Golden 1 members are affected.
"Golden 1 is proactively replacing all potentially impacted cards," said Donna Bland, President and CEO of Golden 1 Credit Union. "The safety and security of our members' accounts is a top priority for us. It's important for our members to know they can rely on Golden 1 to protect their accounts."
Affected Golden 1 members were notified via email and letters this week. Cardholders can continue using existing cards until new cards are delivered and activated. No change has been made to daily purchase and cash withdrawal limits as this could negatively impact members during the busy holiday shopping season.
"One of the best ways to prevent fraudulent transactions on your accounts is to monitor your account activity regularly. If you see anything suspicious, report it immediately," said Bland. "As a first line of defense, our mobile and text alerts can be set up to let you know when transactions occur. Then, view your account activity with online statements and online or mobile banking services. All of these services are free at Golden 1."
Golden 1 maintains sophisticated security systems to help identify fraudulent account activity. Nevertheless, individuals are encouraged to monitor their accounts and promptly report any suspicious activity. Doing so clears cardholders from liability on losses incurred on their accounts.
With more than $8 billion in assets, Golden 1 is the seventh largest credit union in the United States. It has 82 branches, more than 650,000 members, and 1,370 employees.
This credit union is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration.
