The gift of giving: How to make a positive impact in your community this holiday season

Community & Announcements

By December, the magic of the ‘ber months (September through December) is at its peak. With onset of cozy, crisp evenings, holiday lights, and festive bustle, there’s no better time to think of ways we can spread warmth and joy in our community. At Golden 1, we believe one of the most rewarding ways to embrace the holiday spirit is by giving back in meaningful ways, supporting neighbors and creating lasting impact in our communities.

While we might enjoy some of the most beautiful landscapes and, let’s face it, pretty gorgeous weather here in California, there’s still plenty of opportunity to make a positive impact in our communities. Whether it’s donating essentials or volunteering your time, your efforts can make a real difference for those who need it most this season.

Donate to local food banks

Too many Californians struggle with food insecurity, and the holidays can make this challenge even harder. Golden 1 is committed to helping. Since 2012, we’ve supported food banks statewide and, in recent years, expanded our efforts to fight student hunger.

In a 2023 report by the California Student Aid Commission, 66% of college students receiving financial aid identified as food insecure, an increase from a 2018-19 survey that found 39% of students were food insecure. In 2023 and 2024, we donated $100,000 across all 23 CSU campus food and basic needs pantries, continuing our focus on education and community wellbeing.

Here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Donate non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, rice, and boxed meals.
  • Give grocery store gift cards so families can choose what they need.
  • Make a monetary donation to help food banks provide meals year-round.

Organizations to support:

  • Second Harvest Food Bank (Bay Area)
  • Los Angeles Regional Food Bank
  • San Diego Food Bank
  • Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services
  • Visit https://www.cafoodbanks.org to find a local food bank near you.

Support toy and clothing drives

The holidays might represent one of the most magical times of the year, but it’s not all tinsel and twinkling lights for everyone. You can make the difference for someone in need this season with donations of new toys and gently used items and clothing.

Salvation Army Angel Tree Program
Provides gifts and clothing for children and families in need across California.

Toys for Tots
A nationwide program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve that distributes new toys to children in need.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Sacramento Holiday Toy Drive
Donate unwrapped toys for kids ages 6–18. Drop off at 5212 Lemon Hill Ave, Sacramento.

Toy Project: Sacramento Sheriff's Department
Accepts new toys and clothing at 10117 Mills Station Road, Suite C, Sacramento.

Local Clothing Donation Centers
Check local listings or visit Enyart Homes' guide for more Sacramento-area organizations accepting donations.

Spread Kindness

Giving back doesn’t always require money or time—sometimes it’s as simple as a kind gesture. Write a heartfelt card, check in on an elderly neighbor, or pay for someone’s coffee. Small acts of kindness can create big ripples during the holiday season.

At Golden 1, we believe in the power of community. This holiday season let’s work together to make California brighter for everyone. Ready to join us? Visit golden1.com/community to learn more about how we’re giving back and how you can get involved.
