Budget & Save

It’s time to plan your summer family fun! What do you want to do this summer? For many of us, this is the perfect chance to go out and explore. But as we all know, it’s also a high travel season with pricier hotel stays, flights, admission tickets, and more.

These financial hacks can help you find budget-friendly activities for the whole family, so you can get the most out of this season without breaking the bank.

  1. Fun is closer than you think
Start with typing “community events near me” in your search bar. You’ll be surprised how many free summer activities happen right around the corner. One example is free weekly movie nights at your neighborhood park. Most allow you to bring food, so you can throw a little picnic with your family and friends. Just don’t forget to bring a big blanket or a beach towel to sit on! Some other community events include festivals and concerts.

  2. Grab your spot
Speaking of picnics, you can throw one at your local park or beach. Some parks and beaches have areas with free BBQ equipment, tables, and benches – just show up early, since they’re first come, first serve. And if you’re into a more active lifestyle (or simply need some exercise after all those snacks), you’ll always find a good spot to play a game or two.

  3. It’s the season for season passes
If you plan to visit your local theme park, zoo, or museum more than once this summer, a season pass is the way to go. It lets you come to your favorite spot as many times as you want without the need to pay for each visit. Some museums also offer free admission days, so check them out and mark your calendar!

  4. The outdoors is calling
Get in your 10,000 steps a day without paying for a gym. Whether you’re into hiking or biking, there are plenty of trails to explore. One thing to consider before going outdoors is downloading or taking a screenshot of the map, since the signal can get pretty unstable in remote areas. Another fun thing to do outdoors is swimming. If you’re thinking about saving on pool entry fees, local lakes and rivers might be warm enough to check out!

  5. It all starts in the backyard
You don’t have to go far for fun summer activities your family will love. Backyard campouts are a great way to introduce your kids to camping. And is just as fun for the whole family. Turn your summer Friday evening into a night in a tent without driving and spending on gas.

  6. Pick a new hobby
Crafting is also a great budget-friendly thing to try this summer. With plenty of free online tutorial videos, you don’t need to sign up for a workshop. Some craft ideas include making homemade ice cream – it’s a fun activity with a tasty reward your whole family will enjoy. You can also try creating summer decorations, like tissue paper butterflies or homemade lanterns.

Summer doesn’t mean you have to overspend. In fact, you and your family can have a lot of fun without breaking the bank – and sometimes without even leaving your own house. Whatever you want to do, a simple online search can bring delightful discoveries your way.
